‘Yippee-Ki-Yay, Motherf*cker,’ The Horse Whispering Convict Cowboys and an Ode to ‘Whamaggedon’

Say what you want about “Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker,” and the iconic Die Hard quip’s cowboy-meets-contemporary culture mythos — Tim Grierson’s got more than a few well-thought-out words on it — but as good as it is, it’s not even the best one-liner from the film. That, of course, goes to the coke-snorting Ellis and his braggadocious “Hans, bubby — I’m your white knight” right before taking a bullet between the eyes. Or was it John McClane dropping another dude out of a window onto a freaked-out Sgt. Powell’s cop car before announcing “Welcome to the party, pal”?

I dunno, but I’m much more likely to greet my brother at Christmas with “Now I have a machine gun — ho-ho-ho,” or yell “Oh my God, the quarterback IS toast” watching football on a Sunday than I’ll say “Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker” any other time of the year.
